Springtime in Central Park – 36″x54″

Springtime in Central Park

Springtime in Central Park

Oil on linen, 36″ x 54″, 2017

This painting was inspired by a walk through Central Park in April, when the leaves were  just starting to come in.  I was interested in how this natural setting contrasts  the backdrop of buildings along Central Park South.

The leaves almost appear to float in the air, and are backlit by the afternoon sun, contrasting with the solid opaqueness of the branches.  I was also interested in how the regular patterns of the windows contrasts to the wild shapes of the branches.  The figures are absorbed in their own activities.
