Harpswell
Oil on canvas, 9″ x 12″, 2014
This painting was inspired by a recent trip to Maine to visit Acadia National Park and the Brunswick area. This is a scene from the grounds of the Harpswell Inn looking across Casco Bay in Harpswell, Maine. It was one of those mornings that started out overcast then became sunny, so I wanted to capture that moment when you see the sun breaking out even though the scene is primarily gray. The chairs are arranged as if taking in the view, and recall Man with Cigar in the Luxembourg Gardens and the earlier In the Luxembourg Gardens. Compositionally, the chairs bring the gray/white down the picture plane and to the foreground.
