East End Cafe
Oil on linen, 28″ x 36″, 2014
Café on Redchurch Street in London’s East End. The composition focuses on balancing diagonals and the contrast between light (middle and background) and dark (foreground). The figure bridges the two. The chairs are assembled similarly to a painting from Paris, Man with Cigar in the Luxembourg Gardens, where empty chairs surround a single figure, suggesting that a group had gathered there earlier. Looking at the glass wall and doors, you can both see reflections from across the street, inside the café, and through a window at the street beyond.
