Hudson River Sunset and the Ghost of Pier 56

Oil on linen 9″ x 12″, 2020, private collection

.

It was early in the pandemic and most of the city was still shut down.  I went for a walk around the Meatpacking district and as it was getting dark, came upon this scene, between the construction site of Thomas Heatherwick’s “Little Island” to the south and Pier 57 to the north.  I wanted to contrast the movement of the waves with the old piles from Pier 56 to complement the contrasts in the red sky to the blue shadows.   The sun and the pier remind us of endings.
