Lovers in Central Park

The setting of this painting is The Pond in Central Park, in mid-autumn, with the sun low in the sky. There is no hint of the city, nor are there vertical or horizontal lines, not even a horizon line. The sky is only suggested, and mostly in reflections. The lovers in the title are placed in the corner, almost hidden among the rocks, as others walk along the path or sit on the benches. Although most of the composition is in green, it slips between blue-green in the background and yellow-green in the foreground, and the leaves seem to vibrate, and contrast with the calm reflections in the center. The blue-green in the leaves is repeated in the reflections and the woman’s sleeve. Orange is repeated in the leaves above, in the center, and in the foreground.
