Trinity Church at Sunset
Oil on canvas, 36″ x 28″, 2003, Private Collection
It’s amazing how the Trinity Church on Broadway can light up like blazes when the setting sun hits it just right. I wanted to let this drive the drama of the composition, then contrast the peaceful light of the blue skies in the background against all of the activity in the foreground, which is mostly shrouded in darkness. Not wanting the perspective lines take over the composition, I de-emphasized them by hiding them mostly in the shadows and reflections.
