Washington Square Park – October Afternoon

Oil on linen, 24″ x 24″, 2022

.

Washington Square Park is the setting for this painting, captured on a late October afternoon. The sun is low in the sky, casting its rays through the trees, illuminating the west side of Washington Square South. The blurry shadows on the grass contrast with the bark on the tree in the foreground, forming an inverted triangle that mimics the triangular shape of the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in the background. The diagonal shadow is cast by the NYU Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, which is not visible in the painting. A couple with their dog can be seen sitting on the grass, enjoying the warm autumn day and the serene atmosphere of the park.
