Budapest at Sunset
Oil on Canvas, 1999, 24″ x 36″
.
Budapest, Hungary. This painting brings in some new elements for me. Or rather some new, and some that I haven’t used for a long time. The palette, for example: there are a lot of light and dark areas and the colors, mostly are muted. The sunset is an unusual time of day for me to paint. Also, the space: a radically diagonal space in the foreground with a distant scene sitting peacefully in the background. And finally, having a figure integrated into the composition: neither central to it, nor insignificant to it. I tried to tie the whole thing together with a triangular composition and reds.
