NoHo Crossroads – 24″x36″

NoHo Crossroads

Oil on linen, 24″ x 36″, 2022

.

The bustling corner of Lafayette Street and East Houston Street in NoHo is the setting for this painting, captured on a late afternoon in June. The hustle and bustle of the city is on full display, with people walking, glancing at their phones, and engaged in conversation. The focal point of the scene is the towering advertisement for Calvin Klein, which commands attention. The building on the left casts a dark shadow, adding depth and contrast to the image. The diagonal lines in the composition lead the viewer’s gaze out to the four corners and back again, creating a sense of movement and dynamism. On the right side of the painting, the space is rendered in deep and simple perspective, with the lines converging at the horizon line. On the left side, the space is more complex and confounding, with glimpses of the glass wall and reflections of buildings, people, and billboards that are not otherwise visible, adding layers of interest and intrigue to the scene.

NoHo Crossroads incorporates the locations of five previous paintings, though some are more obvious than others:
